Grotto Falls in Tennessee is a popular waterfall in Great Smoky Mountain National Park and as the name implies, it's a grotto where you can walk behind the waterfall.
Grotto Falls is a beautiful 25 foot waterfall located in Great Smoky Mountain National Park near Gatlinburn, TN.
As the name implies, it is actually one of those rare instances being a grotto where you can walk behind the waterfall and look out through it.
The hike to get out to Grotto Falls is a somewhat moderate 3 mile roundtrip hike on the rough Trillium Gap Trail that takes about an hour or more one way if you’re moving at a good pace.

If you’re hiking in the summertime you should be able to see several salamanders near the waterfall and when we went, we also saw several crawfish just on the edge of the pool.
We actually got fairly lucky when we hiked out there near dusk and since it started raining, no one else was on the trail! We sheltered for a bit under the overhang of the grotto behind the waterfall.
Be sure to bring some water and enjoy the winding roads to get out there on the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail where it’s possible to see black bears out through the forest.
